About the tour: City of crystal
Thanks to the exploitation of abundant water flowing at the foot of the hill on which it stands, Colle Val d’Elsa has always linked its fortunes to industrial production and manufacturing. Even today, in this small town, is produced more than 10% of the crystal on the worldwide market. Historically divided on three levels (the village of Santa Caterina, Castle Piticciano and Piano), now refers to the two main blocks of the town: Colle Bassa and Colle Alta, united by a modern elevator. The upper part of the city still retains its medieval character with narrow streets and covered walkways leading to palaces (dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries), such as Palazzo dei Priori, the Praetorian Palace and the Cathedral. The visit may also include the entrance to one of the museums or a workshop where the crystal is worked.
