About the tour
This hermitage in the forest was founded by St Romuald, who arrived here in 1012. After meeting your local and fully licensed tourist guide, the tour starts in this sacred and mystical place. According to tradition, St Romuald decided first to found the Hermitage and later the Monastery. After a thousand years of history, there are still monks who observe a very strict seclusion, but you can see the small buildings in which they live their solitary existence of meditation and prayer. Instead, the monastery features a rich variety of historical and artistic works: Vasari, Della Robbia, Pomarancio and others have left their mark in this place of faith. In the immediate surroundings of the Monastery, in the tiny village of Camaldoli is the old and renowned pharmacy, where apothecaries pots, alembic stills, and other tools used for processing medicinal plants are exposed.
