About the tour
The visit to San Galgano is made of two different moments. First of all, with your fully licensed tourist guide you climb the hill of Montesiepi, the place chosen by St Galgano for his hermitage. Here is the thirteenth-century Chapel of Montesiepi: inside are frescoes from the fourteenth century painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti with stories of St Galgano. In the chapel there is also the famous sword in the stone belonged to the saint. The second part of the visit concerns the great Cistercian abbey built shortly after the saint’s death at the foot of the hill. The roofless church has a Latin cross plan, is divided in three naves and is 71 meters long. Adjacent to the church there are other spaces such as the abbey cloister, sacristy, and the chapter house.
