Historically divided on three levels (the village of Santa Caterina, Castle Piticciano and Piano), now refers to the two main blocks of the town: Colle Bassa and Colle Alta, united by a modern elevator. The upper part of the city still retains its medieval character with narrow streets and covered walkways leading to palaces (dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries), such as Palazzo dei Priori, the Praetorian Palace and the Cathedral.
