TOUR 20 – ANGHIARI: one of the “most beautiful towns in Italy”

Your guide will be happy to accompany you to discover one of the “most beautiful towns in Italy”, overlooking the Tiber valley, and the plains where in 1440 took place one of the largest battles of the Middle Ages in Tuscany. The oldest part of the village was founded by the Camaldolese monks in the eleventh century, who built here the monastery of St. Bartholomew – the structure of which was later transformed into a defensive fortress – and the Church called “Badia”. The historic center is enclosed by massive walls that were built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, along which there are three gates Sant’Angelo, St. Martin and Fiorentina. The core of Anghiari is the ancient square of Borghetto (today Piazza Mameli), at the confluence of the most characteristic streets of the village and where there are two important museums, housed in the Marzocco Palace and in Taglieschi Palace. Still within the walls there is the large square “Mercatale” adorned with a Loggia and fountains.
