TOUR 03 – FLORENCE, Accademia and Bargello
The Bargello Museum is housed in the Palazzo del Bargello, whose construction began around 1255. It is one of the oldest public buildings in Florence and was destined to the “captain of the people”. Following the Unification of Italy, it became a museum which houses some very interesting works by great artists such as Michelangelo, Ghiberti, Donatello, Verrocchio, Brunelleschi, and Giambologna.
The Accademia Gallery is known throughout the world because it holds the original statue of David by Michelangelo, but you can find other works of great value such as the Prigioni, unfinished work by Michelangelo, the plaster model of the Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna, as well as paintings signed by painters such as the Maestro della Maddalena, Taddeo Gaddi, Andrea Orcagna, Giottino, Bicci di Lorenzo, and Spinello Aretino. The Gallery also houses a large collection of icons from the Russian school.
